原为佛家语。指善人死后升入天堂，恶人死后堕入地狱。佛家用以劝善惩恶。后常用以比喻幸福和凄苦两种截然相反的生活境遇。

荡：摇动。动荡摇摆，不安定。形容局势不稳定，不平静。

一：竟然；寒：贫寒。竟然穷困到这样的地步。形容贫困潦倒到极点。

降：落下。比喻突然遭到了意外的灾祸。

啼：哭；号：叫。因为饥饿寒冷而哭叫。形容挨饿受冻的悲惨生活。

应：适应，适合。顺应天命，合乎人心。旧时常用于颂扬建立新的朝代。

心劳：费尽心机；日：逐日；拙：笨拙。现多指做坏事的人，虽然使尽坏心眼，到头来不但捞不到好处，处境反而一天比一天糟。
