《论语·八佾》：“子曰：‘繪事後素。’” 朱熹 集注：“繪事，繪畫之事也；後素，後於素也。《考工記》曰：‘繪畫之事後素功。’謂先以粉地爲質，而後施五采，猶人有美質，然後可加文飾。”后因以“繪事後素”比喻有良好的质地，才能进行锦上添花的加工。 清 曾国藩 《抄＜朱子小学＞书後》：“ 仲尼 曰‘行有餘力，則以學文’，繪事後素，不其然哉？”
