1. The phrase comes from *Etiquette and Ceremonial: Funeral Rites for a Scholar*: "Death in the room, coffin wrapped in quilt." Zheng Xuan notes: "In illness, place the person under the north window; after death, move them to be under the window." Later, "old age death under the window" was used to mean living out one’s natural life. *The First Series of Astonishing Tales*, Vol. 11: “If by accident one enters or leaves wrongly, why does the guilty die of old age under the window, while the innocent perish amidst prisons and saws? Does the old man above have no eyes?” *History of Ming, Biography of Zou Weilian*: “Someone dies of old age under the window, then gains wealth and status?” 2. Refers to a life of mediocrity. *Golden Lotus Lyrics*, Ch. 47: “A true man, born between heaven and earth, if he cannot roam the world or see the country’s glory, will merely grow old and die under the window with no benefit.”
